I saw some of that segment and it brought back mamories from around 1946
when the Rural Electrificatikon Association (REA) began installing electric
service in my rural community. I was a youngster and was happily awaiting
the time when we could quit using kerosene lamps and carbide lights, and
the old battery-powered radios. Unfortunately, there was a big scare cam-
paign circulating that held that "all that electricity in the air" would
kill the cows and mules. As I remember, it was a reeal biggie back then.
I remember wondering why the ignorant OF's didn't learn a little about it
before trying to hold back progress.

This has something to do with bad ground/neutral and funky barnyard
wiring. The result is that there is current flow from say, a grounded
milking machine to an electricl panel across the property somewhere.
The current flowing through the ground bothers the cows.

Yes, but you need a good ground plane. I use conductive foam pads, a cookie
tray, aluminum foil, my random-wire antenna tuner, my computer, a refrigerator
or any host of other things. They work VERY well.

;This should be fine at a single frequency, though certainly not "far
;less lossy" than using good transformers, but note that the SWR will
;change very rapidly with frequency: with, say, a 50 meter nominal
;line length and unity propagation velocity factor, that's about 70
;wavelengths at 440MHz. That means you will see a line length change
;of 1/2 wavelength in only about 1/140 of the operating frequency, or
;around 3 MHz. That, for example, is less than the standard repeater
;offset.
;73, K7ITM
You're right. I never thought to consider bandwidth (we weak-signal types stay
near one frequency most of the time).
The issue of relative loss hinges on the type of 1/4 wave transformer used.
I have seen some designs that involve "UHF" connectors, hacksaw-cut
tubing, and hose clamps. Put one of those at each end of the transmission
line and you're sure to have some loss. Since CATV line is so cheap (ie free)
you could have two separate lines, on each for TX and RX, cut to different
lengths.

A group of us from the western 'burbs of Chicago (Aurora, Batavia,
Elgin) will be on 1292.00Mhz. We have found the lack of intermod,
noise and trash on 1292 Mhz makes it a superlative choice for
Daytoneering.....
In fact a few years back there was a portable repeater on that
frequency in the Arena....although not a QRM problem...

What's the latest on the I-75 construction? I'm also curious as to
what roads will be under destruction in the Colombus, OH area. Last
year, I seem to remember that I-70 and both I-270 bypasses were being torn
up.

via HB9CRV) and OD5ZZ on 21337 KHz at 2350Z (QSL to P.O. Box 782,
Tripoli, Lebanon).
PY0, ST. PETER and PAUL ROCKS. According to Claude, PY4VB, the PY0
DXpedition is still on for early May. They expect to be operational
starting May 8-10. They will operate on 80 meters with a dipole, 40
meters and WARC bands with a vertical and 10, 15, 20 meters with a
tribander. Operation will be CW, SSB and RTTY. For CW look for them
20-25 KHz from the band edge listening up. On SSB for 80 and 40 meters
look on 3795 as well as 7070 +- listening up for USA. Claude has also
done propagation studies so they know what bands to be on for different
parts of the world. K8YSE QUOTE: "It should be a first class operation."
RK3CH, SPECIAL EVENT STATION. Andy, RW3AH, reports the Russian Amateur
Radio Emergency Service, from Moscow City, will broadcast from the
Russian Emergency Amateur Telecommunication Radio Center, on April 26,
for a 24 hour period. The callsign RK3CH will be use in remembrance of
the terrible disaster that happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power
Station on April 26, 1986. RK3CH will operate on all bands, all modes
and including the WARC bands. QSL RK3CH via RW3AH (Russian Emergency
Radio Co-ordinator), P.O. Box 899, Moscow, 127018 USSR. The goal of
this special event station is to remind the people all over the world
the seriousness of what happened in the Soviet Union. Andy said, with
the happening of Chernobyl, citizens of the planet should begin taking
steps to have public control of Nuclear Power Plants.
S2, BANGLEDESH. Jim Smith, VK9NS, has completed his S2 operation
working about 700 stations. Nick, W8XD, reports Jim plans to return for
another operation May 15 or May 22, after his planned trip to Bhutan.

The circuit diagram tells the transistor to be a SRF1397

Subject: Repainting front panels.
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
David Tocher EI2AMB asks about respraying front panels with stamped lettering;
here's what i have always done:-
1) Make sure panel is really clean; there may be remnants of paint in the
depressions of the stamped lettering. Go round each letter with a needle
to make sure there is nothing trapped. Even the slightest particle of
dust will make a real mess of the final results.
Scour the surface of the panel with any suitable household abrasive powder
so as to remove any oxidisation. Make sure you remove any powder residue,
thorough washing in clean water is the answer here.
2) De-grease the panel (using pure isopropyl alcohol).
3) Heat the panel. Use anything you have to hand (hair-dryer, heat shrink
sleeve hot-air gun) as long as it wont create moisture; get the panel to
about 40 centigrade (100 fahrenheit) and keep it at that temperature for
several minutes - this is to ensure there is no moisture trapped in the
surface indentations.
4) Spray on a VERY THIN layer of primer. If the panel is aluminium or alloy,
use an etching primer.
The panel should be heated before applying the primer - this helps the
solvents 'flash off' and prevents any possibility of sags or runs.
5) Keep the panel warm for a few hours to let primer dry. Do not let the panel
cool or moisture/condensation may form on the surface, leading to an
unintentional 'wrinkle finish'.
6) Spray on a VERY THIN layer of paint - i usually use acrylic body-shop paint,
purists may want to use cellulose.
7) Keep the panel WARM and DUST-FREE for at least a week to let the paint
harden. Handling it before this period has elapsed is likely to result
in 'fingerprint marks' which will ruin the gloss.
8) To replace 'whiteness' in the stamped lettering, i suggest using typists
correction fluid, suitably thinned. This stuff will not attack the
acrylic paint, since it uses different solvents. Any excess can be
removed using a swab soaked in thinner.
9) When your panel is finished, leave it for a few days to harden, then spray
with a thin film of clear lacquer; this will protect the lettering from
staining, and add strength to the paint finish.
I have restored dozens of radios using similar methods - even using 'kitchen
table technology' gives perfectly acceptable results. A word of warning;
the solvents used in paints have interesting biochemical properties if
inhaled for prolonged periods. Make sure you have good ventilation to
remove the fumes, unless you want to try some altered consciousness-states.
Another word of warning - the Surgeon General has determined that dropping the
front-panel of a RR690-D on your foot causes severe pain and the use of
language that may be considered unsuitable for juveniles.

Subject: RS12/13 Mode A Transponder
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Has anyone had any luck in making Mode A contacts on
RS12/13? I've been trying for two days with no luck.
My equipment does work. I've made contacts on RS10/11
with just 10 Watts on the Uplink.
Thanks....Keith Erskine - KA1RHO

I saw in a recent issue of Signal Magazine (AFCEA) that Ten-Tec has
a GSA contract number and is selling to the US government. GOOD WORK
TEN-TEC! They pictured their rack mount Paragon/Auto-tuner/SS Power Amp
setup which sells for less than the competitor's tranceivers alone.
I also have reliable word that production was at max during Desert Storm
producing Paragons for MARS use. Maybe that's why the new rigs are so
behind schedule.

This is a list of active polar orbiting APT frequencies
APT Freq (Mhz)
NOAA 9 137.620
NOAA 10 137.500
NOAA 11 137.620
Meteor 2-20 137.850
Meteor 3-3 137.300
Meteor 2-20 appears to have problems. It is not transmitting sync or grey
scale calibration tones. The imaging content is still good, however.
